Echo, the second album by German group Adas, is a wonderful story told through music and voice about the Water Nymph, Echo who fell in love with Narcissus. Most of the songs keep to the old myths, not just the story of Echo either (from what I can tell) which creates a very vivid and varied picture, both of the group and the music they play. While such interpretations can be a bit sketchy at time, Adas does a wonderful job incorporating both beautiful music and enchanting voices. Sung by two women, the album has a heavy full sound to it… you’ll find less of the impossible high notes and more of the full throaty type of resonance.

Although quite a few instruments are used, I will admit that it was the sound of the harp in the title song, Echo, that will pull at your heartstrings. The women’s voices are solemn and achieve a sort of otherworldly sound during it. It is wonderful to note that it is not just the title song that they succeed so well at either. The entire album is gorgeous, by measure, solemn and serene and even, at time, mischievous.

It is of some note, for this reviewer at least, that the album is not sung in English (in fact, I believe it’s actually sung in German). Normally this could be a little off-putting. However, in this instance, you will still be quite able to appreciate the variety of music and vocals, as well as the skill shown by this work. I would suggest not letting that small thing stop you from experiencing such a wonderful experience.

This album is worth listening to, especially since it’s rare to find voices that fit their chosen type of music so perfectly. This album is of professional quality, and at just under an hour long, a great length. I would suggest this album for more easy listening than meditation though, as a few of the songs have the sort of faster beat and rhythm that will make you want to get up and move. The best song for this on the album is "Gráinne O'Máille", sung about the pirate queen of Ireland, if I’m getting the name correct. Trust me, this unique album is fantastic, a sound worth waiting for.
